Social Media Sites Expanding their Levels of Expression

Since the explosion of social media sites such as Myspace and Facebook, competitors have been attempting to develop different types of forums for online users to express themselves. Most recently, Pinterest emerged as an online cork board where members can compile all of their favorite items into one viewing space. These “pin boards” can be organized into specific themes and are then able to be searched and viewed by others, such as a more personalized version of Google. It is meant to connect people by showing similar interests between people. This new form of social media can serve as inspirations for fashion, home decoration, recipes, and events such as weddings, just to name a few. The web site gives off an exclusive feeling by “requesting an invite” to join; this sets it apart from other social media sites which simply require making your own account and joining immediately.

Tumblr is also an online forum that allows its members to express their interests and feelings through pictures, text, music, quotes, links, and video. It differs from other social media sites such as Facebook because users can completely design their individual pages. This form of blogging is seen as the future because of how mainstream sites like Twitter and Facebook have become. However, it is similar to Pinterest because of the levels of creativity involved to participate in the sites; thus only allowing an elite group of people to join.
